Keeping chickens at home can be very rewarding. A small chicken coop with 5 hens can keep your family eating free range eggs all year round. If you wish to make a commercial venture of chicken farming, starting with a small chicken coop is the way. Once this has proven successful, then you can put a small chicken house up.

Small Chicken houses are usually made of steel. They come in various sizes - smallest size is about 3m x 3m - and go up to 30m x 6m. A 3m x 3m poultry house can hold up to 130 broiler chickens and a 30m x 6m chicken house can hold up to 2700 chickens.
Poultry farming, or chicken farming takes many forms. You can free range, or organic chicken farm. The most widely form of chicken farming in South Africa is intensive chicken farming. This is when your chickens, or hens, are kept inside the house all the time. Free range chickens and organic chickens have access to the outside - and are a lot more happy.
